Editorial: Five possible titles

The first title we had thought to this issue was: They tell & write (1) because there were 15 visitors that wrote to us from Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, Chile, Paraguay and Venezuela (see later). This fact constitutes an entire record. That's why we think in a logo that represented precisely this section. If this adds that sometimes we need incorporate mails sent by visitors  like FAQ:  These two sections confirm that during the month of April activity level was very high. Incidentally, there arose another possible title: "Webactivity" (2). Also because it promotes the possibility of subscribing to the RSS page Sertox (see), because it was a month with over 36,000 visits, because we ended up an edition of RETEL (14 ed) and started the No. 15 (see) and so on. But not only were Webactivity, this month we also had lot of classes, interviews by radio  and on TV (see). In one of it about "excess alcohol consumption among adolescents" (third alternative title), we commented on a news item appeared BBCmundo. The other concerned the Bisphenol A (see article) and the recent ban by Canada Govermennt.Another possible title:  TOP of Sertox (4). We noted with the news that the climb can not know in advance the impact that may have and an example is "The Guide to prevent and treat bites by poisonous snakes"(only available in Spanish)  accumulates over 12000 readings. And in the top categories that pleases us beacuse most active were "Sertox News" and "They tell & write". We believe that our visitors share an interest in our activities. Another title raised: "Orfila, the father of modern toxicology" (5) refers to the anniversary of his birth and the proposal of Juan V. Fernandez de la Gala (Spain) who enthusiastically support (See, in Spanish). We especially appreciate the valuable contributions sent this month by Javier Waskman, see later. We recommend also to read Spanish Bulletin with two news monographs on the smoke that hit Argentina (see). Until next number. JCP

About toxicity of neneo ->

Marcela Fontana.Pharmacovigilance Program. Health'Secretary, Neuquen, Ar.April 2008.I wonder if you have any contribution to make in order to solve our need of information related a local possible poisoning with "neneo" (Mulinum spinosum), plant from the area of Comahue. The person made a cooking (not an infusion) with the plant, which was recommended to her (she is diabetic) because of its hypoglycaemic properties. Answer: This species is used as fodder for sheep’s [See the picture in wikipedia]. Dr. Alberto Gurni informs us as follows: "there are various species of Mulinum used to treat hyperglycemia. Since this is an herb that belongs to the family Apiaceae (formerly Umbelliferae), within which there are representatives that, indeed, shows toxicity, it could be possible that some component may be responsible for the clinical manifestations of the patient”.  If any extra information can be given on the subject, we will be grateful.

Worry with a tannery ->

Ver Imagen

March 2008. I am a citizen from Las Toscas city, northern Santa Fe, Argentina, and I worry because I see our health daily threatened by pollutants released by Arlei’s tannery as well as I see the lack of action to correct this situation. A recently spill of thousand litters of sulphuric acid, we had, and nobody from “Arlei” gave an explanation; it seems that everyone is blindfolded. Which is the solution? In the year 2000 when Greenpeace came here because the same problem, it seemed to be raising an answer to people's problems, but again everything came into nothing. Many people left town (had to). An increasing number of persons with kidney diseases, cancer and allergic manifestations are showed in this city, and still people are afraid. How can we reverse this situation? I wouldn’t possible think that the unique solution is to leave this beautiful city, now becoming a sad and desolate, forgotten place... Read more.

Congratulations ->

País: Argentina Teresita Garcia, Bachelor of Nursing, Venado Tuerto, Santa Fe, Ar. April 2008.  Excellent Website! ...  I just recommended to different colleagues. ... So useful! ... Especially important is the permanent updating of the material you present. Thanks for being! ...
Answer: Thank you!

Training in Toxicology ->

País: Argentina Claudia Muravchik. Intensive care specialist in charge of the Central Unit Coordinator of medical emergency responses, Resistencia,  Chaco. April 2008. We are very interested in training ourselves in toxicology to became a 24/7 advisory focal point at the provincial level. With that in mind, we get in touch with you to find out which our training possibilities are, either in distance or presencial ways.
Answer: our ability in teaching is limited (only one concurrent) and the course that we do in Sertox (CUTEL) offers only a basic training. I suggest you to communicate with the Chair of Toxicology (Medicine School, UBA) to see if they can give you a better advice. Maybe some of their offers can fit with your chances. (See )

Arsenic in water ->

País: Argentina Graciela Calvi, Agronomist Engineer, Corrientes, Argentina. April 2008. I have read the article about arsenic in water and find it really so good; I whish to congratulate the researchers and the task force. I am studying a Mastership in Environmental Management at UNL (Santa Fe) and I have this idea that you are really the only ones who could help me on HACRE, by providing me material or bibliographic index, web pages, etc. about water purification processes. I also need the map of the arsenic in our country, the provinces involved, and the increasing degree of this problem through the years, to demonstrate and inform about it to my teachers, who – with other professional profiles- know little about the issue. I would like to formally get in touch with you, and, of course, ask you to subscribe me to yours publications. I’m very grateful and very happy to have found you in the WEB

CANUTEC guide ->

País: Chile Gonzalo Alvarez. Firefighter volunteer, Valparaiso, Chile. April/2008. I work as emergency rescue operator in the Andean Division of Codelco, Chile, and I assist to all kind of emergencies within the division. We also cover the International F-60 route between the town of Los Andes to the passroad Los Libertadores, on the way to Mendoza. I could not find any site in which it can request guides response of hazardous materials like the guide CANUTEC ergo 2004, not on-line version, but written, in order to have it in our unity response. I hope you can help and guide us to find something of the kind.
Answer: we suggest you find out what is available in the CITUC (Chile) or CIQUIME (Argentina).

To exchange information ->

País: Bolivia Miguel De la Oliva Aburderne, a resident of Medical Psychiatry, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. April 2008.
I am very interested in toxicology issues because in my country there is a very little output of publications (if any) about them. In our city (over one million inhabitants) there is only one hospital with toxicology service - the Japanese University Hospital-. Dr. Olivares is in charge of it and he does it just on behalf of his own commitment with science and public welfare, with no support, of any kind, from governmental agencies. Mainly, it’s now my interest to get in touch with you, in a formal way, in order to exchange information.Answer: At your service. We have already incorporated your email address to our list of subscribers. Monthly bulletin will be reaching you at once.

A copy of a paper about plants ->

País: Cuba y Otros países del Caribe

Tania Bilbao Reboredo, Professor of Food Toxicology, Institute of Food and Pharmacy, University of Havana. Cuba. March 2008.Would you be so kind to send me an electronic copy of your work: "A classification of toxic plants adapted for primary health care." I cannot download the PDF form. I also ask for your support with other works related to toxic plants used as medicines, which could be sent to us. Answer: here goes: the Word version of the publication you asked for.  You may consider useful some presentation we made in Congress, such as “the Utility of making an electronic Plants Card Index ". Try in “Search” tipping “plants” and you’ll get related  references available in our website.

From Cuba ->

País: Cuba y Otros países del Caribe Gladis Rocio Laura T., from Bolivia, a second year medical student at University of Cuba. (April 2008). I would like to thank you for such educational pages you put on the Web. Since I love everything related to pediatrics and wish to specialize myself in pediatric surgery,(also because of an ongoing project I have on hands) I would like to ask if you can provide me material on related issues.
Answer: Unfortunately we do not have available what you need. We operate in a pediatric institution, but our service is dedicated only to Toxicology.

From Venezuela ->

País: Venezuela Aura Blanco. Venezuelan Nurse. (April 2008). I was reviewing your Website: very interesting! I would love to have (maybe you could send to me?) a list of agents with which children may be poisoned as well as their respective antidote. A month ago a child aged 6 was admitted in our emergency service after having eaten a paraffin and almond oil’s reductive massage cream. He arrived with cyanosis (eggplant color that in minutes went into black), the blood like chocolate, respiratory distress, apnea, seizures. At first we did not find a single methylene blue ampoule and when we did, we failed to find out how to use it. The baby was sent to another facility to be properly treated. Therefore, I was given the task of making a list of antidotes and their indications (dosage, application, etc) for primary response. See our answer in Read more.

Epidemiology of poisoning in Venezuela ->

País: Venezuela Marisela Diaz Tremarias, Associate Professor, Head of the Chair of Toxicology. Faculty of Medicine. Central University of Venezuela. (April 2008). I have some students that, in trying to establish the epidemiology of poisoning at the University Hospital of Caracas, found that it is only possible by lifting information from those cases which required hospitalization, because mild cases that could be solved in emergency room, were noted in papers scrapped shortly afterwards. This situation is similar in other hospitals of our country and not just with poisonings: unfortunately, I must admit, it is not part of our medical culture to collect this information neither to keep data for statistics. These students want to design, as a contribution of his thesis, a program that allows the recording, control and following of poisoning cases in this hospital, idea which is not only good, but also much needed in my country. So, we consult now about your experience with Rectox and about legal and technical details related to this task.

New e-mail address ->

Ver Imagen Lis Kreitmayr, Poison' Center,  Asuncion, Paraguay. (April 2008) I kindly request the newsletter subscription to my new e-mail address since the previous account will be deactivated shortly.
Answer: Done. Thank you for your interest.

A tannery in urban area ->

Contaminantes, ecología y ecotoxicología

Ramon Tapia thumb, Cromovejas environmental group. April 2008. Regarding your report related with tanneries, I understand that this one is installed in a rural area, isn’t it? If so, what happens when a tannery is installed less than 50 meters from an urban area with high population density? In addition I am interested in knowing the maximum values of exposure of all chemical agents that are used in this economic activity.
Answer: If your question relates to the "Report on contamination tannery (Las Toscas)", sent by Greenpeace, I remember that the industrial plant is within the urban centre of the city, a few blocks from the main square. The chemicals used in a tannery vary depending on the type of process selected (with or without chrome, for example) and the safety limits to be exposed to them are only legally considered in a labor environment.

International Crisis Group (See in Wikipedia) published  two interesting report. Latin American Drugs I: Losing the Fight.Latin America Report N°25, 14 March 2008 . Coca leaf and cocaine production in the Andean region appear to have set new records in 2007. Cocaine trafficking and use are expanding across the Americas and Europe. Despite the expenditure of great effort and resources, the counter-drug policies of the U.S., the European Union (EU) and its member states and Latin American governments have proved ineffective and, in part, counterproductive, severely jeopardising democracy and stability in Latin America.
